The Dreaded Stairs…or are they?

Posted on: January 31, 2011

This video has been floating around for a while now but I think it is a great example how designers can influence a space and change the way people use and interact in it. “This video details a set of  stairs, with a moving escalator next to it …. both of which lead to the same spot on the floor of the upper level. At first no one took the stairs, almost 97% of the people took the escalator.” Realizing they wanted to change the ratio and increase the use of stairs they explored how to make it more fun and make people want to take the stairs. Watch the video to see how they increased stair traffic by 66%. I think this is an excellent lesson to keep in mind as you design your projects and influence the overall surroundings.
